Valuation Delusion — COM technical event at Invente '26Commerce

Valuation Delusion

Participants pitch or are given intentionally flawed or absurd business ideas while convincingly justifying their valuation using financial reasoning. The simulation lets participants think on their feet, defend assumptions under pressure, and recognize how confidence and storytelling can shape financial decisions just as much as accuracy does.

Event Round Details

Description

Teams will be given or asked to create a deliberately weak or absurd business idea. They will have 10–15 minutes to prepare their business model, financial projections, valuation and pitch. Each team will then have 3 minutes to pitch their idea and convince the investors to invest from the ₹100 crore capital pool, followed by a brief interaction with the investors.

Rules
  • Each team must consist of minimum 2 and maximum of 4 members, with 4-6 teams overall.
  • Investors have ₹100 crore as capital pool.
  • The teams have 3 minutes to pitch and sell the investors.
  • Two ways to win — raise the highest investment, or score highest by investors through impression.
  • Each team has one of the following roles: Storyteller, Financial Engineer, Buzzword Strategist.
  • Round structure: (i) Idea — create a deliberately weak or absurd business concept; (ii) Financials — build revenue, growth, margins, and valuation; (iii) Narrative — develop a compelling story to justify the idea; (iv) Pitch — present business model and ask; (v) Interaction — defend business under questioning.
  • Teams get 10-15 minutes of preparation time before presentation.
  • After the preparation time, teams submit their documents and spreadsheets to enable an equal and fair participation.
  • Teams must adhere to time limits and respect investors' decisions.
  • Investors will award their scores and investments based on personal opinions of business and models.
Tie Breaker

In case of a tie, the tied teams will be given a sudden modification to their product or business model. Teams will have 2 minutes to adapt their business model, financial assumptions and valuation, followed by a 1-minute justification to the investors. The team that presents the most convincing and financially justified adaptation will be declared the winner.
