Shake & Stand is a two-round structural engineering challenge where teams first prove their civil engineering knowledge and teamwork, then put their structural design skills to the ultimate test by building an earthquake-resistant tower and challenging it on a shake table.

Event Round Details

Description

Teams will race against the clock to identify and classify civil engineering terms, concepts, materials, equipment, and practices into their respective domains of Civil Engineering. Team members must work in sequence, making the round a test of knowledge, speed, communication, and teamwork.

Rules
  • Each team shall consist of [4/5] members.
  • Only one participant from each team may move at a time.
  • Participants must follow the fixed order decided before the round.
  • The next participant can start only after the previous participant has placed the item in a domain box.
  • Participants may not receive physical assistance from another team members during their turn.
  • Team members are not allowed to change the order of participation once the round begins.
  • Each item must be placed in only one domain box.
  • No running inside the competition area, if the venue requires walking for safety.
  • Incorrectly classified items will receive a penalty.
  • The team must complete the challenge within the specified time.
  • Organizers' decisions regarding classification and penalties will be final.
  • Any intentional violation of the rules may result in time penalties or disqualification.
Tie Breaker

If two or more teams have the same score/time, a Seismic and Structural Engineering Quiz will be conducted.

Description

The main structural challenge. Participants will design and construct a tower using only the materials provided by the organizers. The completed structures will then be subjected to a controlled shake-table test simulating earthquake ground motion. The tower that demonstrates the best combination of stability, structural performance, design efficiency, and earthquake resistance will emerge as the winner.

Rules
  • All teams must receive identical materials.
  • Only the materials provided by the organizers may be used.
  • No additional materials may be brought into the construction area.
  • The tower must satisfy the minimum/maximum height specified by organizers.
  • The tower must fit within the specified base dimensions.
  • Only the provided adhesive/glue may be used.
  • Participants must complete construction within the allotted time.
  • Teams may not intentionally damage or modify their structure after submission.
  • The structure must be self-supporting before the shake test.
  • The tower will be inspected before testing.
  • Any structure violating dimensional/material restrictions may be disqualified.
  • During the shake test, no participant may touch or support the structure.
  • The shake-table test conditions apply as specified by organizers.
Tie Breaker

If two or more towers achieve the same score, conduct a Final Shake-Off or judge by most practically and economically designed structure.
